The first Western European double-delta wing fighter capable of Mach 2. A pioneering Swedish design that proved a neutral nation could produce world-class combat aircraft.
History
The Saab 35 Draken was Swedens answer to the Cold War requirement for a fighter that could intercept bombers at Mach 2 while operating from dispersed highway bases. Its revolutionary double-delta wing configuration was unique in aviation and gave the aircraft exceptional agility. The Draken was designed to be maintained by conscript mechanics and could be refueled and rearmed in under 10 minutes on a highway strip. It served with Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Austria. The aircraft demonstrated that a small, neutral nation could design and produce a frontline fighter to rival the superpowers.
