Bf 109

The most-produced fighter in history with over 34,000 built. It pioneered all-metal monocoque construction with retractable landing gear in fighters.
History
Willy Messerschmitt's Bf 109 first flew in 1935 and became the backbone of the Luftwaffe throughout World War II. Its innovative features included an enclosed cockpit, retractable landing gear, and all-metal stressed-skin construction, all unusual for fighters of the era. The aircraft evolved continuously from the B model through the K, gaining more power and heavier armament with each variant. Top aces like Erich Hartmann (352 victories) flew the 109 exclusively. Despite its narrow landing gear causing ground handling issues, the 109's combination of speed, climb rate, and firepower made it formidable throughout the war. Production continued in Spain and Czechoslovakia into the 1950s.
